Day 1: São Miguel Island / Ponta Delgada

Olá! Welcome to São Miguel, the largest and most vibrant island in the Azores. Known as the "Green Island" for its rolling hills, lush landscapes, and vibrant flora, São Miguel is the perfect introduction to this stunning archipelago. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6:00 PM, where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travelers.

If you arrive early, take some time to explore Ponta Delgada, the island’s charming capital. Stroll along the seaside promenade, visit the bustling Mercado da Graça to sample local delicacies like bacalhau (salted cod), or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many waterfront restaurants.

Day 2: São Miguel Island / Ponta Delgada

Today, dive into São Miguel’s natural wonders and culinary traditions. Start with a scenic walk around Lagoa das Furnas, a stunning crater lake where you’ll witness the unique preparation of Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew slow-cooked underground using volcanic heat.

Next, visit Terra Nostra Park, a lush botanical garden featuring thermal hot springs perfect for a relaxing soak. Enjoy a group lunch featuring the delicious Cozido before heading to Furnas village to sample naturally carbonated mineral waters at the Caldeiras.

In the afternoon, take in breathtaking views of the island’s rugged coastline from Miradouro de Santa Iria, a picturesque northern viewpoint. Later, visit a historic tea plantation to learn about São Miguel’s tea-growing heritage and stop by Ananás dos Açores Boa Fruta Plantation to taste pineapple liqueurs and other pineapple-based treats.

Day 3: São Miguel Island / Ponta Delgada

Begin your day with a visit to Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a mesmerizing twin-lake crater surrounded by lush greenery. Afterward, enjoy free time to explore São Miguel at your own pace.

Options include:

  • Visiting Museu Carlos Machado, housed in a 16th-century convent, to learn about Azorean natural history.
  • Renting a bike or paddleboard to explore the island’s stunning landscapes.
  • Wandering the cobblestone streets of Ponta Delgada, admiring its mix of architectural styles and savoring fresh seafood at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Faial Island / Horta

After a leisurely morning, catch an early afternoon flight to Faial Island, often called the "Blue Island" for its iconic hydrangeas that bloom in summer. Upon arrival, join your leader for an orientation walk to get acquainted with the island.

Spend the rest of the day exploring the charming port town of Horta. Relax by the seafront or visit the legendary Café Sport (also known as Peter’s Bar), a historic meeting spot for sailors and a great place to enjoy a famous gin and tonic.

Day 5: Pico Island / Faial Island / Horta

Today, take a ferry to Pico Island, known as the "Black Island" for its volcanic soil. Pico is famous for its UNESCO-listed vineyards, which have shaped the island’s culture and economy.

Explore Arcos do Cachorro, a fascinating site of lava tunnels, and visit a family-owned distillery for a tasting of local spirits. End your tour at Criação Velha, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Pico’s unique vineyards.

In the afternoon, consider joining an optional whale-watching excursion. Pico was once a hub for the whaling industry, but today, its waters are a sanctuary for whales and dolphins. Return to Faial Island in the evening.

Day 6: Faial Island / Horta

Lace up your hiking boots for a morning walk along one of Faial’s scenic trails. Later, visit the Capelinhos Volcano, which last erupted in 1957, dramatically altering the island’s landscape. Explore the Volcano Interpretation Centre to learn about the eruption and the science behind volcanic activity.

The rest of the day is yours to explore Faial at your leisure. Relax by the harbor, take in the island’s natural beauty, or enjoy a leisurely meal at a local restaurant.
